Red Apple Lipstick Review

April 28, 2017

Red Apple Lipstick happened to be one of the first brands I found on the internet webs when I started looking into “cleaner” beauty. I’ve always been curious about Red Apple Lipstick’s lipsticks since I’ve never seen gluten-free beauty products, only pastries at that given time. I was such a “clean” beauty newb.

Fast forward a year later, I’ve been given the opportunity to try Red Apple Lipstick products after applying to their blogger program after showing some credentials and credibility in my review abilities. That said, everything was provided to me based on my selection and all my opinions will be kind, tactful, and honest. So, let’s get this show on the road.

Extra super long review here because I’m reviewing FOUR products, please bare with me!

I’ve been eyeing this RAL Lipstick in the shade Hibiscus since the dawn of my clean beauty time. I naturally gravitate towards berries, pinks, and sometimes, I will dabble in dark shades since life is too short to play it safe.

The lipstick is encased in a sturdy, matte black case. The cap comes off with ease and has a nice “click” that’s reminiscent of childhood memories of Mom closing her lipstick tube. The bullet that holds the actual lip product has a nice texture meant for grip and minimal aesthetics. And obviously, the outside packaging itself is cutely made of paper and completely recyclable.

Swatch of RAL Lipstick in Hibiscus

At First Swipe

This lipstick is 100% opaque upon first swipe applied with the least amount of pressure. It is described as a true, vibrant raspberry. On me, because my lips aren’t naturally that pink, the color definitely raspberry but with a touch of mauve. It’s not outrageously bright as other raspberry shades you might have used in the past, so it is definitely wearable for day time, at the office, at Trader Joes, or like me, to go pick up my child from preschool without looking weird being paired with sweats.

The consistency is not like a balm, so there’s no shine or sheen. It’s the most matte lipstick that I’ve tried, yet it’s not in the least bit drying. When I rub my lips together, there’s no grittiness or tugging, but there’s no gliding sensation either like you would expect from a balm-like formulation.

The weight of the lip product is something that I always seem to notice. If it feels goopy or heavy or just disgusting on, I can’t deal with it even for the sake of beauty. With this particular RAL lipstick (since it’s the only one I have lol!) is pretty much weightless and Vaseline (yeah yeah I know I shouldn’t be using it because cancer or whatever, but I like it for overnight because I wake up with soft lips. Also, huge tub for like 50 cents) feels heavier on.

The taste of lip products is also something else. I don’t want to taste it nor do I want to have it taste like anything. I’m ok with balms tasting like coffee or having some kind of faint flower-like aroma, but gag me should it be that overpowering vanilla scent. Being devoid of that lipstick taste is key and if it should taste like something, that’s just gross. RAL Hibiscus lipstick is tasteless, practically odorless, and that’s how I like it. There’s a *hint* of lipstick scent that is associated with any lipstick.

I do have to warn you that if your lips are chapped in any way, no lipstick will actually look good on them, not even this one, and not even the balm-like ones. Take care of that pout with some sugar scrub (or drink more water), then apply your lipstick, and then give it a fair evaluation.

Overall Wear

My lips have a knack for reacting to all lip products by immediately burning or eventually becoming super chapped within a few hours. That’s when I know the lip product needs to go back. That said, I have only been able to wear very few brands comfortably all day without even noticing it on my lips. I wholeheartedly recommend you try this lipstick color and this particular brand. It’s on par with other brands that you might be more familiar with like Bite Beauty and Axiology.

RAL Lip liner in Blush

Lip liners are a new thing for me. I literally only have two in my entire hoarding collection of makeup. I know its purpose but I also don’t see it’s purpose? I hate to use that lame excuse of being lazy (because with makeup, I refuse to be), but I guess it’s more like I’ve never had any interest in them. I don’t want to overline my lips and I don’t think I experience feathering because I am picky about the lipsticks I use. I think it’s an unnecessary step if you are already using a stellar lipstick. I kind of think it’s a scam if you don’t actually need it? More on how my thoughts have been corrected in a second.

Clean, sleek, matte black that doesn’t get greasy if you touch it with greasy fingers. The product comes out smoothly with the twist top. I love that you don’t have to sharpen it because of how the product is housed.

RAL Lip Liner in Blush swatch

At First Swipe

Given that I only have one other lip liner to compare this to (the new Bite Beauty Lip liner pencils), I’ll say that it’s comparable. The product applies very smoothly and doesn’t tug at your lips. It has a great opacity at the first swipe that’s not too overpowering.

Overall Wear

I tried to pick a shade that would be the perfect your-lips-but-better but alas, I’ve failed again. I have a weird color to my lips that I can’t quite explain. It’s not very pink, nor very red, but this weird berry shade naturally. However, I think this Blush shade came pretty close to achieving a suitable nude if I wanted to wear it by itself underneath a clear gloss.

It is not drying and it definitely stayed on an entire day after drinking coffee and eating. It didn’t become uncomfortable to wear throughout the day. I think if this is how lip liners are supposed to perform, it did an excellent job. I now enjoy lining my lips before and even after applying lipstick. I can absolutely see its purpose now and see what a difference it really makes in the overall look for crisper, cleaner lines. I’d definitely get more lip liners from RAL as I want crisp, clean lines for when I wear darker shades of lipstick.

RAL Eye Liner in Black

I have a cautionary tale about pencil eyeliners here. Everything smudges on me, even if it’s waterproof. My skin is dry but my eyelids apparently produce enough oils to sufficiently fry bacon on. I don’t understand. With that said, I don’t think I can really give a fair assessment for this eyeliner. I’ve tried Urban Decay in the past, smudged. I’ve tried the new Marc Jacobs waterproof eyeliner and that thing smudged within 30 minutes. So, please take this section of the review for what it is based on my eye lids.

Standard black eyeliner pencil packaging. You will need to sharpen this over time.

RAL Eye Liner in Black Swatch

At First Swipe

If you’ve ever used Urban Decay eyeliner at any given point in your life, then you will know what I’m talking about when I say this is your answer to the all natural, gluten-free, vegan-friendly dupe. It doesn’t tug on your lash line, it’s opaque, and has potential (for the right eyelids) to wear all day.

RAL eyeliner in Black Closeup

Overall Wear

The biggest thing for me is that with oily lids, I also have very sensitive eyes so I can only really use one eye product right now (Physician’s Formula Eye Booster Eyeliner in Black). My eyes are easily irritated, turn red, and itchy with mostly ever single eyeliner on the market (lucky me). That said, the RAL eyeliner did NOT irritate my eyes whatsoever.

Even though everything smudges like I said earlier, the RAL wore on my eyes for a good 2 hours before the Panda eyes started showing up. I was able to wash this off easily with my Nooni cleanser and it came off completely clean. I didn’t need to clean it again after I got out of the shower.

I honestly feel like if you don’t generally have a problem with eyeliners that this would be a stellar choice for you. I believe that because of it’s cleaner ingredients, even the most sensitive eyes like mine will feel comfortable all day long. Having red, itchy eyes isn’t the best look for anyone.

I am giving this a 5-star rating based on how the eyeliner did not irritate my eyes, didn’t pull on my eyelids, and was as opaque as the Marc Jacobs liner. This 5-star rating applies to someone who typically doesn’t have problems with smudging, smearing, and irritation. However, because I have finicky eyelids and everything on earth smudges, I am disappointed to say that I cannot use this product. This translates into the fact that it is NOT the products fault, it’s really my eyelids fault because I would use this daily in a heartbeat.

RAL The Lash Project wand in Black

If you’ve made it this far, bless you. I’ve saved the best for last as there’s no mascara like this that make my lashes look amazing. I’ve already given away the direction of this review, so please continue for the rave.

The packaging is like any other mascara you’ve seen so I don’t have any special adjectives to use to describe it other than nice, black, matte packaging.

At First Swipe

The formulation is on the drier side meaning that your lashes don’t stay wet for years while you’re waiting for it to dry. That said, if you are a double-applier, then you can apply it again almost the second you’re done applying the first coat on your second eye.

The wand and the formulation must be magical because, at first swipe, it separates my lashes and lengthens them immediately. It is as black as you can get without feeling like you’re applying smoke ashes to your lashes.

The real test was in the overall wear because just like my eyelids, my eyelashes also don’t like very many products resulting in smudging, tearing, and regretting I even tried to make my lashes look decent.

Overall Wear

In short, WHERE HAS THIS BEEN MY ENTIRE LIFE?!!?!??! I have ceased to look for the next mascara that might work kind of well for my eyelashes. I’ve found the one, the #LOML right here. I feel like every girl is always searching for the one and praise the Lord when you’ve finally found it after 15 years! Let me tell you right now, this gets a 10-star out of 5-star rating. If you have eyelashes like mine, short, sparse, and thin (apparently, typical “Asian” lashes), then this mascara needs to be buried with you so that you can look amazing in the afterlife. It is that amazing.

The claim with this RAL mascara is that it’ll strengthen your lashes over time and improve the health of them. I’ve tried tons of lash products promising the same thing and I’ve never seen any great come out of it. With RAL mascara, my lashes don’t fall out as much if, at all since using this product and OMG, my lashes look amazing. My bare lash line on top even looks “fuller” in the mornings. The craziest thing is that I don’t really have bottom eyelashes (read microscopic), but this mascara is able to pick it up anyway and suddenly, I have a full set of lashes like everyone else!

There’s absolutely NO smudging, smearing, irritation, and the level of curl that my lashes are able to keep with this mascara is unbelievable! Wearing the mascara by itself, I look like I have “natural” false lashes. When I use it with the Jane Iredale eyelash primer (another holy grail to bring with my in the afterlife), my lashes practically reach the top of my eyebrows. Remember how I said I have the typical Asian eyelashes? Well, this kind of eyelashes doesn’t reach anything anywhere close to even showing up even being thisclose to a magnifying mirror.

You won’t be disappointed if you have lashes like mine by grabbing this product. You needed to get this like yesterday. It needs to be in your makeup arsenal. Actually, it needs to be in your life arsenal. Quit spending money on the stuff that just doesn’t work. I’m absolutely and thoroughly floored by how stellar this is especially for being a product with “cleaner” ingredients. It seriously just doesn’t happen this way. I’ve tried 100% Pure Mascara and that smeared in 3 seconds. Seriously, thank you to whoever made this formulation and picked this wand over at RAL, you need to win the Nobel Prize for this.

Ok, it looks I literally gave everything a 5-star rating and obviously, I need to narrow some things down here. Here’s my overall ranking of things in the order of “you must try right now or you’ll really be so sad forever”.

1. Mascara
2. Lipstick
3. Lip Liner
4. Eye Liner

I hope this review was helpful! There are many, many choices out there for great makeup that’s natural and cleaner if you are in the market for such items. It can be inundating and intimidating. I can tell you that my communications with RAL have been very kind and enjoyable. They seem very helpful and interested in making sure their customers are happy with their products. They also have a great money back guarantee! Again, the mascara, there’s nothing like it!!!

If you’ve tried anything and loved it, please share with me! If there’s something I haven’t tried but must, please let me know! I’m absolutely impressed by the quality and performance of RAL products and believe you will be, too!

Thank you for reading!

Shampoo Guide

February 20, 2017

Hair is such an important part of our lives, especially women. Thus, shampoo is a staple for our everyday lives. While some of us have gone in the no-poo direction (I bown down to you!!!), some of us are still searching for the best shampoo of our lives.

There are so many choices out there based on your hair type. So many promise so many things and before you find the perfect one, you’ve already spent your entire life savings. I have tried a handful of shampoos in my lifetime. I can’t say that I’ve found “the one” quite yet, but I’m getting close.

Whether you love Pantene or are looking for a more natural alternative while you work your way up to the no-poo revolution, I’ve connected with an editorial site that’s done much of the legwork that many of us have not really done yet.

Camilla at has been such a gem and sweetheart in patiently waiting for me to share her company’s research on shampoo. I hope that you will visit her site as I’m sure that you will find some really useful information. I especially loved the section on dry hair because that’s who I am, dry. They’ve gone into the science behind the hair, the ingredients, and their findings are no frills, no fuss, and presented in what I feel is a very unbiased manner. I can tell they didn’t get paid to do this and I am not paid to do this either because who has time to write about things that they don’t believe in these days?

Click on the photo below to check out their reviews and findings. I know that some of them their best findings are not in line with the all natural, CF, vegan, organic haircare, but regardless of what you use, all knowledge is powerful and not meant to use as ammo to judge other people, ok?. So, utilize it as much as it fits into your lifestyle and your beliefs. I am just here to share more resources with you regardless of what my preferences are! Hope you find some of this useful!

Honest Beauty Eye Shadow Trio in Smoky Grey Review

April 15, 2016

Guys, raise your hand if you were/currently still are under the impression that if you use Honest Beauty, you’re going to look exceptionally cute like Jessica Alba. *Raises hand, looks around, really I’m the only one?…mmm. hmm. sure…insert beady eyes emoji*

Anywho… Honest Beauty is a line created by Jessica Alba. If you don’t know her, welcome to earth as she’s a famous movie star and mommy of 2 on a mission to create safer home, baby, and beauty products. Speaking to just the makeup items as I have not used the skin care products, this line is really perfect for those in transition from “mainstream” (e.g. Basically all the makeup you know and love at Target, Walgreens, Sephora, Nordstrom or the makeup that doesn’t have the fancy words like organic, vegan, nontoxic in the label) to “cleaner” (e.g. has some kind of fancy words on bottle) makeup. Unless you are really into makeup, there’s no difference between Cover Girl and Honest Beauty- one can be bought at Walgreens for a few bucks and the other, you need to find an Ulta or have a computer with wifi. But, if you’re kind of into makeup, then you sort of have been exposed to some news about how some ingredients in makeup could possibly be linked to cancer. But more realistically, bad makeup can wreak havoc on your skin- wrinkles, burns, and other unsightly events. So, if you are probably like my friends who are the kind of like makeup-almost don’t care and might ask, “Hm, what’s a safer alternative? I don’t wanna turn into a hippy or spend a gajillion dollars. Also, I don’t want to smell like a tree.”

*Side story: Literally tried explaining mainstream vs cleaner to my husband. He ended up “resting” his eyes. So, fine, I went to my BFF and he basically logged off, no “see ya”, just no response.*

Enter Honest Beauty. You won’t smell like a tree and I kind of don’t know if you’ll be exceptionally cute like Jessica Alba. But, hey, we can all try!

So, when my dear friend, Teri Miyahira raved about every single item in her You Tube videos, I pulled out my credit card from the freezer. Guys, when I say spend freeze, I take it literally serious. I’ve been using this trio since December 2015 (I feel like I need to start photographing my receipts for anyone who is like “Mmmhmmm stop throwing out random dates!”) Just trust me once more today because obviously I’m the last person on the planet to be writing a review when there’s already been 5,000 other reviews.

Let’s get to the nitty gritty!

What ingredients are in this Smoky Grey eyeshadow trio?

Mica, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Zinc Stearate, Magnesium Carbonate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Sodium Dehydroacetate. May Contain: Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288), Ferric Ferrocyanide (CI 77510), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491/77492/77499), Carmine (CI 75470), Manganese Violet (CI 77742), Blue 1 (CI 42090), Ultramarines (CI 77007).

Made without parabens, paraffins, silicones, sodium lauryl sulfates, petrolatum, mineral oil, talc, or synthetic fragrances.

PRODUCT: Eye Shadow Trio in Smoky Grey. Made in USA. Net wt. 0.16 oz./ 4.5g. $25.

Honest Beauty Eyeshadow Trio Package

PACKAGING: Sturdy, light grey, rectangular compact with clean, white Honest Beauty branding on the front. Inside, there’s a little mirror on the flip top and the 3 shadows are housed below.

Honest Beauty Eyeshadow Trio Smoky Grey Package

SHADE: These 3 shades are described as: slate grey, soft black, and taupe shimmer. I don’t think the slate grey is actually *that* grey as it is more of a smoky grey brown.

Honest Beauty Smoky Grey Trio Swatch

Honest Beauty Slate Grey

Honest Beauty Soft Black

Honest Beauty Taupe Shimmer

INITIAL SWATCH: Buttery smooth, no fall out for the lighter shades, extremely minuscule fall out for the darkest shade, opaque with one swipe, and color transfer is accurate from palette to skin.

APPLICATION: So. Smooth. And a little bit goes a long, long way so be cautious at first dip into the pan. All the shades are a joy to work with and blends out so easily. But, not too easily where the color dissipates into thin air. There’s no guess work involved as Honest Beauty provides you with instructions your uncle’s monkey could probably figure out. These instructions are inserted right behind the mirror which I find very nifty as it’s housed in an effective place on the palette.

EFFICACY: This eye shadow trio promises the following:
Contour: Absolutely doable and natural looking with slate grey shade. Check!
Highlight: Established with with Taupe Shimmer- classic, clean natural pop. Check!
Shape your eyes: Soft black will smoke your eyes out like a rock start who takes showers. Check!
Buildable color can take you from day to night with the perfect eyeshadow trio of neutral colors and shimmer shades. You have to love it when the descriptions don’t lie like Shakira’s hips. Check!

Based on what how Honest Beauty describes the product’s use, I would deem this eye shadow trio to be highly efficacious. There is nothing in their description that promises anything wild like…looking like Jessica Alba.

IS THIS WORTH SHARING OVER COFFEE? Alright, if you’ve read any of my reviews by now, you know every review NEEDS coffee purely for the length alone! But, I am honestly (no pun here) impressed by every Honest Beauty product I have (e.g. eye liner & lip crayons). I feel like the way the product is marketed is so welcoming and fun. Yes, her ingredients are “better” than mainstream makeup, but she doesn’t rub it in and make you feel bad for using that Tom Ford lipstick you love so much. Because PSA: While Jessica is all about Honest, she still appreciates all beauty products such as those by Koh Gen Do and for me, that’s just so much yaaas.

I see Honest Beauty like a good friend who’s inviting you over for a good cup of good coffee. The trick being that this friend doesn’t tell you that it’s actually good coffee (not Folgers) made in a good way (not in that Bun thing from last night). And, this friend doesn’t say one bad thing about the Starbucks Platinum card that you are so proudly showing on your keychain. (Dudes, I like Starbucks, it’s comforting to see the little green mermaid when I’m in a weird part of earth.)

However, let’s not downplay that Honest Beauty’s ingredients ARE better than say your usual Revlon or CoverGirl. This is really great if this is important to you. Also, you won’t smell like tree. I find myself recommending this brand to friends who ask for “better” ingredients but who will still use Tom Ford or Burberry- because really *drool on Tom Ford*. All the makeups! Anyway, if you’re a purist, then this brand is probably not up your alley and that’s ok, too. All the makeups!

A huge plus is that it’s not sooo hard to get in-person access to this brand. There are Ultas all over and if you have friends who like makeup, pretty sure they have a few Honest Beauty items already. Sometimes, my friends get turned off because of the exclusivity of a makeup line. I get it, if I didn’t care about makeup, I’m not scouring the internets to find this one foundation that is only available from this one place online. But, Honest Beauty is like “Hey come hang out, let’s share the makeups!” I also appreciate the price point! Let’s be honest (again, no pun), “safer”, “organic”, “green”, “vegan”, “whatever makeup that’s better than the stuff at Walgreens” can be expensive. BUT guys, to be fair, cleaner makeup is not any more expensive than Tom Ford or Burberry. I like that you won’t have to hide your credit card and dolla bills in the freezer with Honest Beauty. If you are trying to change out from Tom Ford (omg, but why, but ok, we’d still be friends) or whatever, you won’t be at a major deficit since 1. FREE returns for ONE year if you order from, 2. FREE returns in store at ULTA for 60 days with receipt, and 3. Really, not all thaaat expensive, in comparison to other “green” brands.

Highly recommend trying it and then highly urging you to keep it as your staple smoky grey eye shadow trio. You can’t go wrong. Possibly the best smoky eye trio I’ve ever used and I have way too many palettes to count. Remember your uncle’s monkey? If he can play with this, anyone can.

Happy Eye Shadowing!

Five Minute Makeup Look

March 14, 2016

My good friend who has twins requested that I discuss a “Five minute makeup look”. There are a ton of these out there and mine may not be any different, but I feel it could be achieved in probably 3.75 minutes once you get the hang of it!

Five Minute Makeup Look

Step 1: Clean and prep your skin with your choice of skin care products. I like to use oil cleansers and then I follow a 78-step Korean skincare regimen that I will go into length in another post.

Step 2: Once your skin is prepped, I urge you to apply sunscreen. I don’t care if you’re inside all day or if it’s cloudy. At least, SPF 15 of whatever sunscreen you like to use. My skin care is a combination of Japanese and Korean products, so my sunscreen is also from these lines.

Gressa Foundation

Step 3: Apply your choice tinted moisturizer/foundation. I’ve selected the Gressa Skin Foundation. I like this step to be EASY as possible! I don’t want to sit there and blend for five days, but I also don’t want to go bare face. Yikes, no one wants that, trust me. I have 4-5 I rotate between and for no particular reason other than “I just feel like this one today.” This step really takes about 45 seconds because I like a light coverage that just evens out the skin. Going to Target doesn’t need my face to be full coverage.

Step 4: I like to apply a little under eye concealer because I have two little children. I also use the Gressa Skin foundation to add a little more coverage here.

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Happy

Step 5: BLUSH. Don’t ever forget blush in my opinion. I would even skip the tinted moisturizer because I can’t go outside my bedroom without blush. Cream or powder, it doesn’t matter, just get that blush on there.

Step 6: Eye brows. Here I use the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil. If you have good browns, groom them a bit and you’re done. If you need more brow power, then apply your brows but only fill them in where the hair is sparse. Think Trader Joe’s face, not Oscar night.

Step 7: Curl the lashes and apply mascara. This should take 5 seconds and honestly, some days, if I wear my glasses, I don’t do anything to my eyes.

Zabana Essentials deoderant

Step 8: Deodorant, always deodorant. I loooove Zabana Essentials for all my personal odor care.

Hope this was helpful!!

What’s  your 5 minute look?

Hourglass vs. Kjaer Weis: What to Splurge On?

February 4, 2016

My good friend asked me if she should splurge on the Hourglass (HG) Edit Palette or get the Kjaer Weis (KW) Foundation. I thought she was mad to ask me such a thing. But, she looked at me with serious eyes and wanted a serious answer. Granted that these are different cosmetic products all together, it invoked some deep, careful thoughts and a calculator.

Hourglass & Kjaer Weis

Several points were taken into consideration before I came to the final conclusion based on pure scientific logic. Just kidding, but seriously, a lot of thought went into answering this life-changing question. Peruse the chart below.

Hourglass Edit Palette VS. Kjaer Weis Foundation

Product Price/USD Amount Price/Ounce
Hourglass (Singles)
                  Powder $45 .34 $128.57
                  Blush $35 .15 $233.33
                  Bronzer $50 .39 $128.21
Hourglass Palettes
                  Powder (3) $58 .35 $165.71
                  Blush (3) $58 .33 $175.76
                  Edit (6) $80 .29 $275.86
Kjaer Weis
                  Foundation $68 .26 $261.54
                  Foundation Refill Only $40 .26 $153.85
                  Blush $56 .12 $466.66
                  Blush Refill Only $32 .12 $266.67

Hourglass Blush Palette

Price Per Ounce:
Without going into ingredients, taking into account your personal beauty philosophy, etc., KW appears to be expensive across the board. A KW blush refill is almost the same price as the HG blush that comes with its own packaging.

Then, looking at HG, it appears comparatively more affordable. However, in looking carefully within the HG blush products – a single HG blush is as expensive as the Edit Palette that contains 6 different shades. The best bang for your buck here is basically the single HG bronzer and the HG powder.

But, wait, don’t click Confirm Order on the HG palette just yet.

Better Value Overall?:
The Powder palette is the best value out of all the HG palettes. However, if you want to try the HG blush, the palette would be the way to go. Unless you are 250% sure of the color you want in the single blush, price/ounce HG palette $175.76 vs. HG single $233.33 would be considered a drastic difference.

Here’s where KW only looks more expensive, but in actuality, it is not. If you look at the KW blush refills, they are $32 vs. HG $35 which is not a huge difference for the actual product. Thus, it comes down to what finish, ingredients, and color you would like in your blush. I have reviewed several KW items here and here. You can always put the refills in a pretty little Z-palette if price is the issue. Even comparing bronzer and blush- again two different makeup products generally aimed to do different things even though you can use bronzer as blush. HG bronzer is $50 while KW blush in its compact is $56- again not a significant price difference.

Foundation is simply different from the blush breakdown in the chart above, so speaking to it in a comparative fashion would be a travesty to all the millions of years of my doctorate training. I can already see my advisor’s face..that “don’t even go there” face. Uy. It is possible though to use a darker shade of foundation as bronzer/contour…..but let’s not even go there right now.

Kjaer Weis

Need or Want?:
When the want is strong enough, the need is not even a question. But, do any of these products harness a true need to complete life? It really depends on who you ask and makeup comes down to personal preferences. I am only here to display the facts! I will leave you to search your soul on this one.

For the makeup admirer: It might come down to packaging which both have done beautifully. Hard to choose!!!

For the makeup lover: It might be price, need of product, and whether you’ll actually use it.

For the makeup obsessor: Like me, you’d probably just get both!

For the makeup lover who only uses organic products: Kjaer Weis would be the winner!

But if you want my opinion, keep reading…

Pulling out a calculator to look at price per ounce? I’ve seen parents (me) do this at Target/Costco in the diaper section because Target is the trickiest- buy 4 boxes of any of 2 sizes- newborn or size 1 (but I need size 4). Only in the big box not the mega box. Then you may get a $25 gift card. But wait, Cartwheel this deal, buy 3 more boxes of only size 5 (but I need size 4) in the mega box and get another $15 gift card. WHAT EVEN!? Just stop Target!!

But for luxury makeup, it should be easy – if you like it and you feel it’s worth the price tag- get it. Luxury makeup is luxurious, it’s a treat, it’s special, and dwindling it down to cost per application takes away from the luxuriousness of it all. The amount of makeup we wear per day, even the people in theater or whatnot can not be compared to Target diaper deals. Nothing can be compared to Target diaper deals! So, in my humble beauty practices, I rarely ever look at the price per ounce when I’m purchasing makeup- read: this was the first time ever I did this in my life for my good friend. To be really honest, even looking at the last column is giving me the sad feels.

Clearly, these are such different products!! Obviously, I own both and have enjoyed. In the end, even though I am blush lover, I still suggested (read: pretty much forced) my friend to splurge on the KW foundation because really amazing organic foundation in incredibly beautiful packaging is very hard to come by! But, that blush palette! See, I couldn’t really decide either!

What would you splurge on? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Gressa Skin Eye Tint in Bronce and Eye Brush Review

January 29, 2016

What an honor it is to be sharing this new Gressa Skin product with you that will launch in February 2016! It’s an eye tint that is multifaceted and beautiful- exactly the words I would use to describe Gressa Skin as a company. It’s not everyday that someone like me gets to meet and befriend the creator, owner, and mastermind behind such a coveted brand. What I really love is that Svetlana is so down to earth and emits such genuine warmth. Fifteen minutes into our first meeting, her and Drey (her aesthetician) were already asking about my family and by the end, we were joking about giving birth (wait, not Drey though). Then, at the pre-launch, I got to meet her whole staff- Erin the makeup artist, Kerry her right hand woman, Drey, Mr. Svetlana aka her husband, and Sophia the logistics manager! They have such an incredible chemistry and love between each other that far surpasses regular, old coworkers. I believe this connection ultimately affects the process, mission, and quality of their products.

I’m excited to share with you this beautiful product as well as the results of my experiment I did over the course of 2 days! Let me tell you before you keep reading, Svetlana generously gave me this eye tint and brush PLUS the illuminating serum. Just like that. I tried to give her my money and even cried a little but she was insistent. You guys, I’m telling you, this. just. doesn’t. happen to me!

But, scientist cap on and the review is as unbiased as humanly possibly below! Please enjoy!

What is Gressa Skin?

The Gressa brand is a brand that celebrates glamour and sex appeal and still remains free of silicones, preservatives, and anything that is harmful for your health.

What ingredients are in this eyeshadow?

Since I’m sharing this with you before it even launches, I do not have this information quite at the moment. However, please check back maybe the end of Feb and I will have this all updated! For now, you can check out Gressa’s website here!

PRODUCT: Eye Tint in Bronce. Made in USA. Net wt. 0.24 oz./ 6.8g. $TBD

Gressa Eye Tint Bronce Package

PACKAGING: Sleek, not overly glossy, true black. Light weight twist-top circular container. Extremely travel friendly! Definitely for those who like to take care of the appearance of their products, this will not smear or get that “greasy” look in the event you touch the product then touch this cute container thereafter.

Gressa Eye Tint Bronce

SHADE: I will update directly from the website once this product info is available. Directly looking into the pot, it’s very bronzy with red undertones with a gorgeous iridescence. At some angles, it looks very brown but coppery and other angles, it looks like a cappuccino with shiny cinnamon specks.

Gressa Eye Tint Bronce Swatch

Top swatch: A lighter swatch that blended out to this smokey, sexy, warm, brown, bronze shade. Where the swatch is lightest at the edges, you can see how it leaves you with the true meaning of a clean blended out look. I applied with with my fingers obviously but even with fingers, sometimes cream shades can “skip” a little on the lids leaving a spots where the shadow is missing.

Bottom Swatch: A heavier swatch, but this only took 2.5 swipes of my finger to achieve this opacity. Can you see that iridescence I mentioned earlier? I see pink and purple in this bronze. The cream applies very, very evenly. This was one swipe, lift, swipe again, lift. I did not have to redo the swatch halfway through my swipe if you know what I mean.

Gressa Eye Tint Brush

Gressa Eye Tint Brush close up

APPLICATION: With fingers, it was effortless. The cream shadow glided on very, very smoothly. Depending how much product you picked up on your finger, you can absolutely build this shade to your desired level of opacity.

However, there is a specially made brush for this eye tint that actually works very well! How many times have you bought the brush that was made for a product that didn’t really work? This brush in its entirety is very sleek with a matte appearance. It is light weight and a great length for control and accuracy of application. The bristles are cruelty-free, synthetic, and beautifully tapered. I was able to use this brush to apply the eye tint by tapping on the lid, and then using the tip to blend out the edges.

EFFICACY: Below is where I conducted two experiments over the course of two days using the same eye lids both days (I did a joke here, did you catch it? *wink*). My lids are surprisingly oily, they are also hooded, and so it is a rarity if shadows never crease.

Control: I washed my face and applied my skin care consisting of 2 Korean skincare products, a moisturizer, and a little bit of rosehip oil at 8:00am. I let all this sink in for 3 hours and did not apply any makeup products nor did I engage in any brow grooming, thus the craaazzyy brows. Please don’t unfriend me. I also did not leave the house during these days. At 11:00am, I applied the eye tint using the Gressa brush. At 9:00pm, my husband took eye lid pictures for me. Total wear time: 10 hours.

Gressa Eye Tint Concealer vs Nothing

Exhibit A: Concealer Versus Bare Eye Lid Skin, Conducted on Tuesday, January 26, 2016.
Left side: I used RMS UncoverUp. Minimal fading or creasing. The eye tint was as opaque at the culmination of my experiment this day as it was upon initial application.
Ride side: As I predicted, my bare eye lid skin ate up the product. There was noticeable fading and creasing.

Gressa eyetint primer no primer

Exhibit B: Primer Versus Bare Eye Lid Skin, Conducted on Wednesday, January 27, 2016.
Left side: I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer (it’s Cruelty-Free). The eye tint stayed very opaque. In the outer-v of my lid, it really stayed “smokey” and rich.
Right side: Again as predicted, creasing and fading. Compared to the left side, there is a noticeable different in how much the eye tint had disappeared and creased- look at how the eye tint really tried to move into my crease.

Results: Clearly, I need all the primer. My eyelids are shadow vampires. With primer, the eye tint in Bronce stayed on for 10 hours, comfortably, flawlessly, no fading, no creasing, and did not irritate my eyes whatsoever. The color remained opaque and I was able to enjoy looking at my left eye lid throughout the day to admire its iridescence and sultriness. For the right eye lid though, I was shaking my head every couple of hours passing by my mirror. How can someone with such dry skin have the oiliest eye lids in the universe??

IS IT WORTH SHARING OVER COFFEE? Well, if you’ve read the entire way through, you either needed a nap AND coffee twice or it’s already obvious that I could absolutely share lots of information about this product and the Gressa company over coffee! I really loved not only this multifaceted shade but I loved how comfortable it was to wear!! It did not gravitate towards a stickiness or tackiness after 10 hours of wear. It did not get “heavy” in a sense where I could feel it on my eyes and it did not travel into my eyeballs. I believe this might THE shade for that warm summer date night with a gentle breeze because it is so sultry, does not look “dirty” in the lower lash line, and has a magical way of picking up the light. I almost think *some* women might even be able to make it work as a bronzer on some level! Aside from the great ingredients if that is what you are interested in- it is cruelty free, organic, and vegan, the product is extremely efficacious. For those who are transitioning to safer products like my mommy friends who love the Maybelline Eye Tattoo, this would be a lovely substitute. Furthermore, this eye tint could be used as a base (for me, over a primer) for a realllly dark smokey eye or a really amazing bronze cat eye! Honestly, the possibilities are endless and I highly recommend this product! Amazing product and even more amazing company!

Kjaer Weis Eyeshadow in Grace Review

January 25, 2016

I already know what you’re thinking.

But, can you blame me? Once I feel like I’ve struck the holiest of grails, I just start building my collection and I don’t look back. To some, I might be a borderline hoarder slash addict on some level. But, I become a loyal fan who simply believes in and has confidence in what companies produce.

We all know holy grails are hard to come by. We all know that even though there are a bajillion neutral shades of brown, there are only a handful that any of us enthusiasts would consider “the one”. You know, the one you’d stock up on and panic if it were ever discontinued. There are so many aspects to the perfect netural brown: the formulation, finish, lasting power, and whether that one brown shade does what we need it to do. Does it look natural? Can I build up to a dramatic look? Is it smokey enough? Does it contour, define, but still look classy? And heaven forbid, does it make me look dirty? It’s a picky business when it comes to eyeshadows!

So, for someone who has little time each day to even look at my eye lids, I need a color that will give me zero hassles and zero worries hours later. I can’t worry as to whether it has traveled somewhere without permission or faded away… like my youth. I need a shadow that stays on, stays the same color even 8 hours later, and at the end of the day, I won’t feel that pang of regret when my eyeballs are red and itchy.

What ingredients are in this eyeshadow?

Please refer to this link to review all her ingredients.

PRODUCT: Eye Shadow in Grace. Made in Italy. Net wt. 0.043 oz./ 1.2g. $45 (with compact) /$27 (refill only)

Kjaer Weis Grace packaging

PACKAGING: I honestly wish that I bought the compact now because I feel like I’m missing something in my life. But, as I’ve said 5 times now- it’s luxurious!

Kjaer Weis Grace eyeshadow

SHADE: As described on their site: ““A luscious, light mocha color with a semi-matte finish.”” What I appreciate about all the descriptions on their website is that it is accurate! It’s not fluffy or full of unfulfilled promises- just beautifully straight to the point. This is definitely, absolutely “The One” for me. Do you ever just want more natural definition to your eye? This is the perfect color. What I LOVE is that you cannot mess this one up! I’m not sure what magic is bestowed upon this and all other shadows, but even my puppy did my eye makeup using this shade, it would still look flawless.

Kjaer Weis Grace swatch

INITIAL SWATCH: Just as with Divine, Grace is semi-matte and breathes life into your eyelid. It is smooth and color translation from pan to skin is impeccably perfect. There is no fall out yet the shadow is very buttery.

APPLICATION: I am trying not to repeat myself, however the consistency among products and within products is stellar. Again, Kjaer Weis created yet another shadow that has seamless application properties. You can build Grace as much as you need to and it will never look too overdone, muddy, or sloppy.

EFFICACY: Did this give the illusion of not wearing makeup? Yes. Did this create subtle depth but also perform well enough to provide a dramatic look? Absolutely. Everything Kjaer Weis promises in this eye shadow, she delivers!

IS IT WORTH SHARING OVER COFEE?: YES! From baby steps to professional level usage, Kjaer Weis meets all levels of needs. How amazing is that? And the plus for those who are interested but absolutely not obliged in my eyes, the ingredients are top notch and cruelty free. I would wholeheartedly suggest Kjaer Weis as one of my top 3 when my friends ask me “What’s a good neutral brown?”

I love using Grace to blend out the edges of my smokey eye when I use Grace. It’s so perfect and definitely makes you look like you had your smokey eye professionally done. I believe this look is achievable for skin tones similar to mine up to medium. For tanned beauties, I believe this shade would be a beautiful highlighter shade or a shade to layer underneath another shade to help make that shade more vibrant. I personally feel that the best thing about these eyeshadows is you can LAYER and it just never seems to get cakey or overwhelming. Not many organic shadows have this level of versatility. I also feel that for people who are just starting out with makeup and are not quite experts with the shadow-brush dip pressure, how much to pick up, how much pressure to apply, and what direction to blend things, Kjaer Weis shadows would help them learn beautifully! I’ve been in a place where I got a palette, the color was “too much of everything” and I wasn’t able to blend, unblend, apply correctly, and I completely got turned off to eyeshadow all together.

My final answer is: GET ALL THE SHADOWS!

Kjaer Weis Eyeshadow in Divine Review

January 18, 2016

You guessed it! Another Kjaer Weis review! You must be wondering if this is the only makeup I own- no it’s not. And if I was sent these products- no, I’m pretty sure Kjaer Weis and her staff don’t even know I exist. But, if they one day discover my reviews- HI TEAM KJAER WEIS!!!!

Anywho, today, I want to showcase her eyeshadow. These are the most expensive singular shadows I own. But for some things, it’s a moot point as to how much they cost because it’s a necessity, for life. A little background about my eyelids and eyeballs- they are sensitive and quite temperamental. Sometimes, even the most organic, clean eyeshadows can make my eyes red, watery, and puffy by the end of the day. Thus, I’ve become accustomed to not wearing any shadow but great at obsessively collecting them. So, when I purchased Divine after I purchased her foundation, I was 99.92% sure that this shadow was going to change my life. And, after testing this out for 5 months now, I am thrilled to finally report that this is my holy grail.

What ingredients are in this eyeshadow?

Please refer to this link to review all her ingredients.

PRODUCT: Eye Shadow in Divine. Made in Italy. Net wt. 0.043 oz./ 1.2g. $45 (with compact) /$27 (refill only)

Kjaer Weis Divine

PACKAGING: Just as stunning as the foundation and blush compacts, albiet a different shape of course. Shiny, heavy weighted, solid feeling, and a perfect encasement to the precious shadows.

Kjaer Weis Divine eyeshadow

SHADE: As described on their site: ““Divine is a beautiful gray that will shade the eye and give the illusion of not wearing make-up. A classic, neutral grey.”” If any of you are like me, there was a point in time where you wanted to be the smokey eye queen and bought all the shades that made a smokey eye look easy. However, probably NOT like me is that you mastered it and for some reason, I can only do it on other people. At least to me, mine never look the right kind of smokey. That “smudge” on the lower lash line never looks smokey-classy, just smokey like I fell in a chimney. So, I gave up and decided to adopt the one color wash all over the lid with a cat eye and never looked back. Then along came Divine and thanks to Lily at Genuine Glow, after reading her review, it gave me those hopeful smokey eye feelings all over again.

Kjaer Weis named this shadow so correctly as it is soo divine. It is a heaven sent for those less apt to using jet black for smoke. It is great and appropriate for the perfect day time smokey eye. Add a little more and you’re ready for night time. And that dreaded smudge under the lash line? This shade was made to marry your lower lash line!!!! It absolutely gives depth, adds a shade to the eyes that looks so wonderfully clean and classy!

Kjaer Weis Divine swatch

INITIAL SWATCH: If the shade wasn’t already perfect, at first swatch, this was fully decadent. The color you see in the pan is perfectly translated onto the lid. There are no shimmers, however not absolutely matte. To me, there’s an ever so slight satin finish that takes this shadow to the next level of perfection. I love satin finishes as opposed to extremely matte or extremely glittery because I feel like it just adds dimension. And, a simple glean of health that a matte finish doesn’t provide.

APPLICATION: Seamless. Dip your little brush in the pan and whether you do a light sweep all over the lid or concentrate over the crease, it glides effortlessly anywhere you want to place it. Have you ever gotten a shadow where you dipped your brush into it a little too enthusiastically, then placed it on your lid with the same emotion, and instantly you regretted that emotion? Well, with this shade, you don’t have to worry about regretting anything. The first layer applies like a nice clean slate. The second layer appears evenly layered and equally seamless. You can build as much as you need to and it will never look too overdone, muddy, or sloppy.

EFFICACY: Did this give the illusion of not wearing makeup? Yes. Did this create subtle depth but also perform well enough to provide a dramatic look? Absolutely. Everything Kjaer Weis promises in this eye shadow, she delivers!

IS IT WORTH SHARING OVER COFEE?: All I can say is now I’m going to look really good drinking coffee with my really good looking smokey eye. It looks like I mastered the smokey eye look years ago with this shade. There’s always one aspect that makeup lovers have a secret struggle with, be it the cat eye, taming the brows, finding the right shade of something. Well, thank you Kjaer Weis, now I can scratch the I-love-makeup-but-why-does-my-smokey-eye-look-like-it’s-on-bad-coffee off my list forever! I’m genuinely excited for this divine product she has blessed us with! I love being able to do the cat eye with this shadow and I am surprised at how the look can last for a good 9 hours without fading or slowly trying to meet my blush.

Like I said with the blush compacts, the price is also very steep for one eye shadow. But, for the sake of just having one compact in case you want to travel with one shade, I vote absolutely yes to this luxe goodness. Again, my recommendation would be to procure all the eye shadows and simply place them in a Z-palette. I have personally enjoyed looking at my collection daily sitting my z-palette daily and find that many other green beauty enthusiasts are quite happy going in this direction as well.

In closing, if you want a smokey eye but feel that they are too hard to master, too much for a daytime look, ends up looking less than classy- RUN to your closest stockist right now. Divine will solve all your smokey eye problems!

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Happy Review

January 13, 2016

Here is another rave about Kjaer Weis’s Cream Blush in the shade: Happy. In my previous review on the shade: Embrace here, all my thoughts are still applicable so I will not inundate you with repetitiveness. So, let’s just look at all the pictures and get the happy feels!

PRODUCT: Blush in Happy. Made in Italy. Net wt. 0.12 oz./ 3.5g. $56/$32 (refill only)

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Happy

PACKAGING: Shiny, good-weight-in-my-hands goodness from basically, heaven.

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Happy up close

SHADE: As described on their site: “Everyone who’s seen this pink just smiles, so we had to name it Happy. Gorgeous on all skin colors, exceptional on darker complexions.” This is the stand out blush I was speaking to in my other post. This is type of color I am drawn to! Look at it! Doesn’t it look happy?! Perfect shade for everyday, every look. It even looks gorgeous on the lips!

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Happy

INITIAL SWATCH: It looks bright in the pan and for some, scary bright. But it can be worn sheerly or layered for that intensity. If it was acceptable to apply blush all day and end up looking like a happy clown, I’d do it! The top swatch is obviously lighter and blended so this is what it would most likely look like on your cheeks or lips. The bottom is a heavier swatch to show the opaqueness of the shade and how bright it can get. This level of application would be so stunning in the summer on the ..lips (you almost thought I’d say cheeks, huh?)

APPLICATION: Six words: Kerry Gold Butter on warm toast.

EFFICACY: Again, like with ALL cream blushes, the lasting power is a bit less compared to powder blushes.KW does not make any claims about how long this product will last, but she does claim exuberant, creamy, velvety, and a natural finish. I say she hit all the nails on the head with these descriptors.

IS IT WORTH SHARING OVER COFEE?: Short answer: Yes. Long answer: One of the best cream blushes I have ever tried. I’ve tried many and this one just feels good on the skin all day. It is moisturizing and my face actually feels refreshed at the end of the day. That’s a big claim because many things dry my skin out, even “cream” products. Definitely one of the shades to have in this collection if you are a lover of bright, bold colors! How much I love this blush can be measured by the fact that I carry this with me in my bag, I don’t even carry anything more than my wallet, lip balm, and eye drops. If I met up with a friend for coffee who wasn’t wearing blush (and I believe we ALL need some level of blush- it’s just so pretty and fun!), I’d probably reach across the table and dab-dab-blend-blend this cream blush on their face for them! Run, don’t walk, to procure this blush!

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Embrace Review

January 7, 2016

If I haven’t raved enough about all things Kjaer Weis, I will soon. This is going to add to my collection of raving. I’ve reviewed her foundation here, and will now be sharing with you my all time favorite cosmetic item: Blush.

How much blush can one person have or need for just 2 cheeks on a face? It’s all just varying shades and textures of red, pink, coral, orange, mauve, and berry. But that’s exactly the point! There are so many varying shades and textures, so I just need them all! Something about blush makes me so happy, it can brighten your face instantly and application doesn’t have to be painstakingly accurate for it to look decent.

So, who and what is Kjaer Weis all about?
*this section is a repeat of my first post in case this is your first post!*
Kristin Kjaer Weis was born in Denmark and is a makeup artist based in New York City. She is the creative mastermind behind the makeup line that is organic, all natural, gluten free and free of irritants that performs as well as other cutting edge high-end luxury brands on the market. Her packaging is highly luxurious- think of Chanel or Burberry- yet completely environmentally friendly – each product casing is refillable.

What ingredients are in her makeup line?
Please refer to the link here to review all her ingredients.

PRODUCT: Blush in Embrace. Made in Italy. Net wt. 0.12 oz./ 3.5g. $56 (with compact) /$32 (refill only)

Kjaer Weis Cream Blush- Embrace

PACKAGING: One word, stunning. Exactly like the foundation packaging only different dimensions. Again, nicely weighted compact that just feels and looks luxurious.

SHADE: As described on their site: “This nude-pink is my go-to when just the palest hint of blush is needed. Best for light to light medium skin tones.” Admittedly, I am the kind of girl who isn’t afraid of blush- I love those stand out colors since this is usually the only product I am comfortable with on my face. Lips and eyeliner take time and careful application which at times I don’t have. This is the lightest shade I own and I quite enjoy it! It is so understated and definitely gives a “within glow” look. The perfect shade to pair with a bold lip or eye makeup.

Kjaer Weis Blush Embrace

Kjaer Weis Blush Embrace

INITIAL SWATCH: Just like KW foundation, this is quite creamy and dense. The color is just as described- nude pink and light. It exudes classic, clean looking beauty- no fuss, no mess, and seriously, I don’t think you can mess this up even if you tried.

APPLICATION: So, unlike the foundation which I discuss here, once your face is already prepped, foundation has been applied, the blush is pretty seamless to apply. I use the Wayne Goss 13 Brush to apply it and sometimes with my fingers- flawless application every time. Easy to blend and easy to build color while still feeling weightless on the skin. Think of it as spreading Kerrygold Butter on warm toast- sooo buttery smooth.

EFFICACY: As with ALL cream blushes, the lasting power is a not as long as compared to powder blushes. This does NOT make this product less efficacious though. It is perfectly pigmented and applying a touch of powder over it WILL make it last longer. KW does not make any claims about how long this product will last, but she does claim natural, green beauty with an understated touch of color which she absolutely delivers.

IS IT WORTH SHARING OVER COFEE?: Short answer here is: YAS!!!! Again, just like the foundation, when my friends ask me what new product they should get- I tell them KW. Not everyone needs five different foundations, so I simply tell them, “Get. all. the. KW. blush.” However, not everyone likes cream blush. I understand people like to apply blush one time in the morning and have it last until they are done with the day. People retouch foundation/use powder, but rarely do I ever hear the same sentiment with blush. They key point here in using this product is that what you put on your face gets absorbed into your body. I feel comfortable knowing all the ingredients in this product are harmless, so absorb away body! I also feel confident that every time my children slobber all over my face with their kisses, I am not harming them with my vanity.

But, goodness, I adore blush so I think most blushes are seriously amazing. Even though this one is much lighter than what I would normally be drawn to, it’s so classic and gorgeous that it’s making me rethink life! I’m like Mimi from the Drew Carey show who likes bright, bright colors! So maybe a quick tip- if you just won the lottery- then don’t even think twice- make a mass order of everything Kjaer Weis, right now. If you haven’t won the lottery, then get one blush with the compact because everyone needs at least ONE Kjaer Compact to show their friends how fancy we are! Otherwise, buy a Z-palette and fill it up with all the refills- much more affordable and looks just as pleasing to the eyes!
